This was a long day of driving. There is not much along this route and the acceptable campgrounds were booked. If you ever need to stop on I80 in northern Nevada, make sure you get reservations at Iron Horse Resort in Elko, NV. We did get to drive through the salt flats and stopped at the Bonneville Speedway. We got out, shot some photos, and walked the dogs a bit. Would love to come back when there was some racing going on. I’ll just add that to the list.
For dinner we stopped at the El Aguila Real. I had my newly discovered Enchiladas Verde con Huevo. Delicious.
The Long Drive

April 29 – May 1, 2012: As per our usual method, we headed for a full-hookup “parking lot” campground after the Grand Prix of Utah. After days at the track, ultra-conserving water and electricity, all we want to do is take a long shower and maybe watch some programming. This campground is only about 45 minutes from Miller Motorsports Park and is well maintained. There is even a walking/biking path so the dogs can get out a bit.

As with after almost every race, we did our usual find the nearest campground with full hook-ups. Since this was only about 45 minutes from the track. That are really any pictures nor is there any interesting stories. I guess this post is more like a log entry.

April 25-29, 2012: Due to ALMS taking this track of the schedule, we have not been to this track in two years. Since Darren is shooting GT3 and Cooper Tires Prototype Lites for IMSA this track is back on our schedule. This is a good thing. The track has very nice facilities and the scenery is wonderful.
We did have a little excitement when a storm arrived and begin to blow the RV about. The wind suddenly changed directions and began to blow quite hard. The temperature dropped dramatically. I was in the middle of grilling some chicken and when I tried to rescue it it became covered in sand and dust. As I was cooking our second dinner, someone banged on the RV door. That’s pretty creepy as we had no neighbors. The man explained that he need help. He was driving by and his pop-top camper had opened in the wind and in the excitement he had lost his keys. Darren put on his raincoat (it was raining quite heavily at this point) and ran out to help him. The man never could find his keys in the dark and ended up sleeping right where he was parked until the sun came up. He did make the effort to stop back by and thank Darren.

We left the Bryce Canyon area for the track and decided to take as much of scenic route 89 as possible. The extra time required was well worth it. It was a very pleasant drive.
Driving through Utah

April 24-25, 2012: There are a couple wonderful campgrounds in Bryce Canyon National Park. However, because we had just experienced 100+ degree heat in Las Vegas we thought it would be wiser to stay somewhere with hook-ups. The only problems is that Bryce Canyon (or at least the rim) is at 7000 feet above sea level. Needless to say, air conditioning was not needed. The KOA was nice though and had great views. It also allowed us to fill up on propane for our upcoming stint at the track.
