Mountain Man BBQ

punkerdoo | July 31, 2006 | 10:03 am

On the edge of the GA-NC border, just north of Dillard sits a place called Mountain Man BBQ (Like everything, its on 441). From the outside, this looked like your typical roadside eatery, but the pit was right out front and smelled fantastic.
Upon entering, you can choose 2 directions in the front hall which are apparently the smoking and non-smoking sections. As we don’t smoke cigarettes and didn’t feel like starting, we chose the non side. On the day of our visit, the hostess had apparently forgotten to come to work, so they had enlisted the help of a young boy. According to our waitress, he was doing a much better and more accurate job. The interior was really interesting. That is to say interesting in the sense of monochromatic pine paneling and plastic flowers. Then again, we were there for the food. The smoking side, which I think doubled as the bar, may have been more eyecatching.
Most of the BBQ places we have visited don’t have Baklava on the menu, but when we paid our bill to a Greek gentleman, we felt better about its inclusion.

Husband: Pork Plate w/ potato salad & Brunswick stew
Punkerdoo: Pork plate w/ cole slaw & Brunswick stew

Ambience rating: 2 Squealers

(Nothing to look at, but the outside sure smelled great)
Food rating: 3 Squealers

(light smoke, no sauce choices, meat was fairly moist)
Beer rating: 3 Squealers

(Beer and wine on our side, the basics with a few common “imports” )

Oinkers

punkerdoo | July 28, 2006 | 3:34 pm

Heading north on GA-441 (Why are we always on 441?), just south of Clayton, GA you will run across Oinkers. If you see the huge Wal-Mart in the sky, not only will it ruin your illusion of eating BBQ in the middle of nowhere (which is exactly where you are) but you have also traveled too far north. Make sure to bring cash because they don’t take American Express or any other form of modern payment. Husband had read that the Q was good so we were expecting more. Maybe they were having a off day, but we found the meat to be dry and flavorless. Their sides however kicked-ass. The Brunswick stew was the best we have had in a while.

Husband: Pork Plate w/ potato salad & Brunswick stew
Punkerdoo: Pork plate w/ cole slaw & Brunkwick stew

Ambience rating: 3 Squealers

(we found that the cow was out of proportion to the chicken on the wall mural, staff was great, out of t-shirts though , a shame because of the cool name)
Food rating: 2 Squealers

(No smoke, but the kicker was the dry meat)
Beer rating: 0 Squealers

(no booze :( )
